In the article the author determines the quantitative influence of the skin effect on characteristic impedance of a coaxial cable in relation to frequency and after taking into account dimensions of the interior radius of the cable screen, the radius of the conductor and the thickness of electrical insulation. Characteristic impedance plays an important role in locating the damaged place in the power transmission line and therefore in this article we present the dependence of its module and argument from the frequency taking into consideration the conductor skin effect. After taking into consideration the fact that the total resistance and inductance of the coaxial power cable are dependent on the skin effect the article demonstrates that characteristic impedance of a cable is a complex function of frequency. It has been demonstrated in the paper that in the wave method of localization of damages in power cables the characteristic impedance of a cable should be determine after taking into account the skin effect.
